Why Do People Become Freemasons?

Why Do People Join and Remain Members?

People become Freemasons for a variety of reasons, some as the result of family tradition, others upon the introduction of a friend or out of a curiosity to know what it is all about.

Those who become active members and who grow in Freemasonry do so principally because they enjoy it. They enjoy the challenges and fellowship that Freemasonry offers. There is more to it, however, than just enjoyment.

Participation in the dramatic presentation of moral lessons and in the working of a Lodge provides a member with a unique opportunity to learn more about himself and encourages him to live in such a way that he will always be in search of becoming a better man, not better than someone else but better than he himself would otherwise be and therefore an exemplary member of society.

Each Freemason is required to learn and show humility through initiation. Then, by progression through a series of degrees he gains insight into increasingly complex moral and philosophical concepts, and accepts a variety of challenges and responsibilities which are both stimulating and rewarding. The structure and working of the Lodge and the sequence of ceremonial events, which are usually followed by social gatherings, offer members a framework for companionship, teamwork, character development and enjoyment of shared experiences.

If it is true that this organization is about people who want to make a better persons out of themselves, then it must be easy to become a member. Am I right? What qualifications must people have , in order to become a freemason?

admin March 6, 2011 at 11:55 am

The one essential qualification is that you have a belief in a supreme power / being. Other than that it is normal for a candidate to be a mature man of at least twenty one.

To join you simply ask a Freemason known to you, and he will help you with the rest.

“what are some of the beliefs and concept ?”
Freemasons have to believe in God or a higher power. We believe in helping our fellow man and improving ourselves.

“why are the concepts so secretive ?”
Those general concepts aren’t secret at all.

“is there a freemasonry agenda ?”
No.

“what exactly is done during the ceremony of becoming a free mason ?”
The details of out ceremonies are a secret. They teach the practice of moral, domestic & social virtues.

“why are female not allowed to be a free mason ?”
There are masonic organisations for women too. See http://www.owf.org.uk/ and http://www.hfaf.org/

“is free masonry a religion ?”
Absolutely not.

In the first instance you should contact the District Grand Lodge of Nigera and ask for details of a local Lodge so you can make contact.

Best of luck with your journey.

jim September 7, 2011 at 5:59 pm

”Admin” , You need to stop telling people being a free mason is good because it is’it . There is only one God and that is God almighty.

admin September 8, 2011 at 5:15 pm

Jim – nothing in Freemasonry against a belief in God. In fact a belief in God is a requirement for joining, furthermore we’re taught respect for God throughout our rituals.

Why do people become freemasons? Also do fremasons worship the devil?

admin January 4, 2012 at 9:54 am

People join Freemasonry for many reasons:

Charitable inclination
To improve oneself as an idividual
To develop new friends & a community
Family connections
Interest in history

Freemasons do not worship the devil.

Josiah Kennedy January 9, 2012 at 11:06 am

If this organization is to make man better then himself that is very good, but why doesn’t it do it publically? any thing that is of huminity and God is public and not secret. What about the secret that people are blind folded during initiation? this is the devil means of evengelism. let stop be evangelist of the devil in disguish. I like to be a part but like my training to be public like T D Jake, Duncan William do at man power conference. I hereby call on every child of God not to be a part of a free mason. Devil incarnates

admin January 9, 2012 at 11:45 am

Freemasons do publicly acknowledge the reason for our existence and our beliefs but those against Freemasonry still publish and repeat lies about our brotherhood.

We have secrets so that we can recognise a fellow freemason by his knowledge of those secrets.

Freemasonry is lucifarianism… Your correct you believe in one god. That one god is Satan. Members are slowly brainwashed from free thinking to being followers of satin and denouncing the one true god. God is mocked and the holy Eucharist is made fun of. Your followers are lost sheep being led to the slaughter.. The end of days is near and all of you that follow this satinism or lucifarianism will stand infront of the lord and be judged.
Lucifer will not protect you… For those of you who have lost your way, may the lord spare your souls and look opon the good you have done in life.

admin January 11, 2012 at 8:43 am

That is complete nonsense. Freemasons do not worship the devil.

I am still considering to become a mason, though i’m am only 19 years of age i feel that i am still at an age where my understanding of masonry is adequate. Do Freemasons accept all faiths? I my self am a Sikh and have full faith in God, also if i were to join, i do not know anybody that is a Freemason , how would i go about joining. Also i am very concerned as most people have accused the masons of devil worship!

admin January 16, 2012 at 8:17 am

Freemasonry is absolutely open to all faiths, we ask that all members have a religious belief but we do not concern ourselves with what that is. Here’s some more information from Grand Lodge.

Generally to join a Lodge you need to be 21 years old, but I believe there are some exceptions. I have asked a senior member of the Lodge to contact you privately.

Truth is Out there January 19, 2012 at 9:47 am

So who is the ‘higher power’? that I would love to know. Is it true the masons derived from the Knights Templar? Also..tell me this quote ‘One of the Conductors then handed the “candidate” a human skull, upside down, with wine in it. “May this wine I now drink become a deadly poison to me, as the Hemlock juice drunk by Socrates, should I ever knowingly or willfully violate the same” (the oath). ….What do you make of that? I’ve seen the light brother.

admin January 23, 2012 at 2:45 pm

The “higher power” is God in whichever way the individual refers to Him.

There is a Masonic order called Knights Templar which unlike regular Freemasonry which is open to all faiths is for Christian Masons. Knights Templar takes its name from the military order.

Your quote does not come from any ritual in Craft Masonry.

The UGLE website lists the “Grand Lodge of The Republic of Liberia” as recognised, but sadly I can’t find a website.

Grand Lodge of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons
Republic of Liberia
West Benson Street
Po Box 10-0727
Monrovia, Liberia
West Africa

If you write to them, they should be able to put you in touch with a local Lodge.

Good luck.
