Why Do People Become Freemasons?

Why Do People Join and Remain Members?

People become Freemasons for a variety of reasons, some as the result of family tradition, others upon the introduction of a friend or out of a curiosity to know what it is all about.

Those who become active members and who grow in Freemasonry do so principally because they enjoy it. They enjoy the challenges and fellowship that Freemasonry offers. There is more to it, however, than just enjoyment.

Participation in the dramatic presentation of moral lessons and in the working of a Lodge provides a member with a unique opportunity to learn more about himself and encourages him to live in such a way that he will always be in search of becoming a better man, not better than someone else but better than he himself would otherwise be and therefore an exemplary member of society.

Each Freemason is required to learn and show humility through initiation. Then, by progression through a series of degrees he gains insight into increasingly complex moral and philosophical concepts, and accepts a variety of challenges and responsibilities which are both stimulating and rewarding. The structure and working of the Lodge and the sequence of ceremonial events, which are usually followed by social gatherings, offer members a framework for companionship, teamwork, character development and enjoyment of shared experiences.

As we have had to many enquiries from potential members in Africa, we’ve created the following page Freemasons in Africa with some contact addresses.

Similarly Freemasonry for Women has been created for those interested in those organisations.

Hello Admin,

Thanks for this interactive segment!
I have my reserved personal reasons to join Freemasonry (charitable inclination, to improve myself, to develop new friends [like-minded] and a community and make family connections). I’ve taken a step forward and sent my petition to Mombasa Lodges in writing via Post Office. However, I haven’t get reply to my letters and I’m worried whether they received them.

Equally, I stand to be corrected, the procedure is petition, investigation, interview, lodge visitation, initiation, raising e.t.c. These process is o.k and my question is: what are the requirement(s) to join the Fraternity? What is the fees for initiation and others? What is the cost of uniform, apron e.t.c.? What is required from a new member and what will Lodge offer during the ceremony?

Finally, I worked hard and got hold of a Mason who I’ll not mention his name and had a quick chat at Whitesands Hotel in Mombasa. During the chat, he asked about my education and insisted on a university degree and “Freemsonry is an Organization for the rich people”. Honestly, I couldn’t understand him. Kindly would you give me further explanation?

Anticipating your reply.

To get the most out of Freemasonry requires regular attendance at your Lodge and Lodge of Instruction. You therefore need to join a local Lodge.

To get an introduction please contact your District Grand Lodge; please see the following page: Freemasonry in Africa.

I became a mason on 23 November 1977. I have never regretted it and have continued to work and participate. I have held positions such as Worshipful Master, Assistant District Deputy Grand Master, High Priest, District Deputy Grand High Priest, Thrice Illustrius Master, District Deputy Grand Thrice Illustrius Master, Emminent Commander, District Deputy Grand Emminent Commander. To be one ask one. only if you want to serve others.
